Warehouse Security: Guards and Patrols for Docks, Yards and Inventory
Written by Paul Thandi, Operations Manager, On Guard Security Ltd. — 10+ years in BC security · Updated September 2026
Stock in a warehouse is never still for long. It arrives on a truck, crosses a dock, sits in racking, gets picked, and leaves on another trailer, sometimes within hours. Effective warehouse security follows that path and protects each handover point, from the gate to the outbound trailer. On Guard Security Ltd. provides licensed guards and mobile patrols for distribution centres, logistics hubs, cold storage and multi-tenant warehouse units in Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Richmond and across the Lower Mainland.
Key takeaways
Warehouse security works best when it follows the goods: gate, dock, trailer yard, racking and shipping.
Loading docks are the busiest handover point, so checking drivers, paperwork and seals there prevents most confusion.
Trailers and containers parked overnight need patrol checks, not just a locked gate.
Losses can come from inside as well as outside; consistent procedures protect honest staff as much as they deter theft.
On Guard Security Ltd. offers dock guards, after-hours patrols and alarm response with 24/7 support from Surrey.
Warehouse losses tend to happen where responsibility changes hands: a driver handing over a load, a pallet staged by an open door, a trailer dropped in the yard for tomorrow’s pickup. A security plan that only covers the building’s front door misses all of them. We start every warehouse security assessment by walking the route your goods take, then decide where a person adds the most value.
A guard in a warehouse checks the identification and paperwork of delivery drivers, vendors and visitors, directs them to the right door or office, watches the yard, and keeps a written record of who came and went. Guards observe and report; they are not police. When something is wrong they call police and your shift lead, and they document it.
The dock is where a warehouse is busiest and most exposed. Doors are open, trucks are backing in, and several carriers may be waiting at once. A dock guard can:
check drivers in against the appointment schedule and confirm the carrier name;
keep drivers and visitors in the designated waiting area rather than on the floor;
record trailer numbers and seal numbers where your process calls for it;
make sure dock doors are closed when a bay isn’t in use.
Under the Security Services Act, a guard must carry their security worker licence while working and produce it on request, so your staff and carriers can always see who they are dealing with.
Key insight: Many dock problems aren’t dramatic thefts. They’re paperwork gaps: a load released to the wrong carrier or a trailer that nobody logged. A guard with a clear procedure closes those gaps.
At the end of the day, a lot of value sits outside: loaded trailers, empty containers, forklifts and fuel. Our mobile patrol officers visit at varied times, walk the fence line, check trailer doors and container locks, confirm dock doors are down and lights are working, and log each visit. If your alarm goes off, our alarm response team can attend, check the building and report back.
BC’s Trespass Act helps here. It treats land surrounded by a lawful fence, or posted with signs that meet its visibility rules, as enclosed land. It also lets an occupier authorize someone, such as a security guard, to direct a person to leave. A fenced, signed yard and a guard acting on your authority put you on clearer footing than an open lot. (This is general information, not legal advice.)
Not every loss comes from outside. Honest staff are the majority on every site, and the best way to protect them is a consistent routine that applies to everyone: controlled staff entrances, visitor sign-in, and clear rules on who can enter high-value cages or cold rooms. A guard enforces the routine the same way every shift, so nobody is singled out.
Guards can also carry out opening and closing checks, confirm that high-value areas are locked, and note anything out of place, such as pallets staged near an exit or a side door left propped open. Cameras help here too, but they record events after the fact; a guard notices and acts during the shift.
Key insight: A security routine that applies to everyone equally is fairer to staff and more effective than one that relies on suspicion.

Warehouses that are part of a larger manufacturing or processing site are usually covered under our industrial security services, which add shift-change and shutdown planning.
If you are comparing options for the first time, our overview of what a security company does explains the main service types side by side.
On Guard Security Ltd. has more than 10 years in BC security and is based at 12565 88 Ave in Surrey. Our guards are licensed and JIBC-trained, and every new hire trains one-on-one with a senior officer for a week before working alone. There is no single official list of seven; different sources group security in different ways. For a warehouse, the layers that matter are the perimeter, the gate, the loading docks, the yard, building access, inventory areas and after-hours response. Guards and patrols cover the people side of those layers, while fences, locks, alarms and cameras cover the physical side.
Do warehouses have security guards?
Many do, though it varies by site. Busy distribution centres often keep a guard at the gate or dock during operating hours, while smaller warehouses rely on locks and alarms with mobile patrols and alarm response after hours.
Can a guard control the loading docks during business hours?
Yes. A dock guard can check drivers in against your schedule, keep them in the waiting area, record trailer and seal numbers if your process requires it, and make sure unused dock doors stay closed.
How do you handle theft that may involve staff?
We apply the same routine to everyone: controlled staff entrances, visitor sign-in, access rules for high-value areas and opening and closing checks. Guards observe and document what they see and report it to your management, who decide what happens next.
Can you check trailers and containers left in the yard overnight?
Yes. Our mobile patrol officers visit at varied times, check trailer doors, container locks and seals, walk the fence line and log each visit, and our alarm response team can attend if your building alarm goes off.

We used On Guard for our building while we were transitioning to our new intercom and entry system. They were always incredibly professional to deal with and the guards showed up well ahead of time and did a great job as we went through the process, which extended longer than expected. On Guard was also great at getting somebody on site the first night we needed them on very short notice. Overall, we were extremely happy with their service.
